eBay and Google Combine Forces to Sell Jesus Online

Released on = April 4, 2006, 1:46 am

Press Release Author = Eastons-Bible-Dictionary.com

Industry = Internet & Online

Press Release Summary = Search for \'Jesus\' on Google and you will be astonished to
learn that Jesus can be purchased on eBay for a \"fantastic price\". The Internet\'s
largest online auction site has apparently joined forces with search behemoth Google
to sell Jesus.

Press Release Body = The bulk of Google\'s sizable revenue comes from selling ads
that appear alongside its returned search result. For Google and at least some of
it\'s advertising partner, this form of advertising has been wildly successful. It is
one of these ads that caught the attention of Bert Harrington, the owner of several
popular Bible study websites. \"While searching for Jesus related websites, I was
confronted with an ad from eBay offering a \'Fantastic prices on Jesus\',\" said
Harrington. \"I was surprised to say the least!\"

Worried that eBay\'s questionable ad may also be appearing on his own sites prompted
Harrington to dig a little deeper. \"In order to offset costs, we allow Google to
display ads on our sites,\" explained Harrington. \"This allows us to offer free Bible
Study services like Eastons-Bible-Dictionary.com.\" But while thankful to Google for
the extra revenue, \"Clearly this is not a service that has any value to our
visitors. I really don\'t want people thinking we help finance our efforts with ads
from people claiming to sell Jesus!\"

To be fair, eBay is not alone when it comes to cashing in on Jesus. An ad for
\"Passion in Costa Rica\" offering real-estate to retirees was also shown to people
searching for the word Jesus on Google. And not to be outdone, Google competitor
Yahoo also displays a pay-per-click Jesus ad from eBay.

But Overstock.com seems to have gotten the final word. Their Yahoo sponsored listing
claims that Jesus can be yours for $10.39. Surely a steal if there ever was one.

eBay, Google and Yahoo could not be reached for comment. For that matter, Jesus
refused comment as well.
